Good day to all SD11 folks, and happy fathers day to all dads! I wanted to give us all a convention wrap up after last weeks Republican Party of Texas (RPT) convention.
The first item to discuss is that we have a new chairman. Steve Munisteri was elected to lead our party over the next two years. In a very close race Steve beat out the sitting chairman Cathie Adams. Cathie had held the job for 6 months filling the term after Tina Benkiser stepped down to work for Gov Perry's campaign. Cathie did a fine job and I thank her for her service. Steve won 13 caucus votes and Cathie won 12, with a Tom Mechler winning 6 caucuses. On the nominations committee Tom's vote went to Steve and the committee nominated Steve for chairman. In an ensuing floor vote Steve was elected by the delegates to be chairman.
Also in the Vice-chairman's race Melinda Fredricks was elected our new vice-chair. After Steve's election to the chair the convention had to have a women vice-chair so SD11's own Dr. Robin Armstrong was not able to be re-elected as our vice-chair.
On the State Republican Executive Committee Sheryl Berg and I where re-elected to serve you again. I think you for your support again, being re-elected unanimously by the caucus to serve you again. Thank You!
We made some modifications to our party rules, the most important was a cap of 9,000 delegates and 9,000 alternates to our convention. At the last convention we put a floor of 7,500 delegates and alternates. We have never been close to that level but when Perry wins with a large majority vote in November we can be around those numbers and we wanted to ensure we could fit in the convention facilities that are available in Texas to meet. We also modified the rules about the responsibilities of county chairs and precinct convention chairs about what records to keep and distribute after their meetings. Please read the new rules which should be on the RPT website by now or soon. You can link to them at www.srecsd11.com.
The platform was also modified some, it was updated to make our response to the Obama administration's trampling on our liberties, and we added a legislative agenda that we want our legislative members to follow. The SREC will also be developing a tracking system to track and report how our elected officials are doing following that legislative agenda. I think this will be a great tool for our voters to see how their elected officials are doing.
If any of you have any questions please let me know and please have your friends register to get our informational e-mails at www.srecsd11.com.
Thanks and God Bless!
Dennis Paul
