| House Bill 11: Border Security Legislation
Last week, we sent a very clear message about the importance of addressing the border security concerns by going after drug cartels and human traffickers who prey upon our border region. House Bill 11 supports the Texas Department of Public Safety by providing $105 million for 300 additional troopers, 250 of which would be stationed on the border by 2017. It also creates a "DPS Officer Reserve Corps" of retired troopers. Additionally, it strengthens existing laws by making it a crime to "encourage or induce" a person to remain in the country illegally. Texas would be the only state in the nation with a permanent plan to address the criminal activity on the border as well as enhance penalties for human smuggling.
