E-Newletter from State Representative Dennis Paul

 SPECIAL SESSION NEWS

The Texas House is using this 30-day special session to evaluate and consider dozens of bills on a variety of topics.  These topics include property tax relief, public school funding, and todays overwhelming support to pass the Governor's highest priority - The Sunset Bill.
House Bill 1 - The Sunset Bill which protects Texans medical and therapy care at the first opportunity was passed in the House 147-0.

In addition, the Texas House will evaluate the misuse of state funds by certain state agencies and investigate potential impact to Texas from the anticipated federal repeal of Obamacare.

As many of you are aware, the House and Senate can move at different speeds because of the differences in size and their respective rules.  House rules require Texans to be given notice of committee hearings to allow them to make their views known.  House rules also require longer notice periods for certain bills to be considered for final passage to allow Texans to read the bills that are going to affect them and to allow voters to express their views to House Members.  Both the House and Senate have to agree on the exact text of any of the special session items.  Because of differences in the size of chambers and their rules, House deliberation sometimes can take longer than Senate actions.

UT Physicians Bayshore Family Practice Center earns national recognition for patient-centered care

UT Physicians Bayshore Family Practice Center has earned Level 3 recognition as a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) by the highly respected National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

The PCMH is a primary care delivery model that combines teamwork and information technology to improve care and patient experience while reducing costs. The distinction acknowledges use of evidence-based, patient-centered processes that focus on highly coordinated care and long-term, participative relationships.

"This is an important credential as it recognizes UT Physicians as a leading institution for reorganizing and coordinating primary care that maximizes efficiency and continuity across a medical neighborhood," said Logan Thornton, Dr.P.H., M.P.H., assistant director for the UT Physicians Healthcare Transformation Initiatives.  To read more click here.

Recently Representative Paul and District Director Dawn McDonald had the pleasure of meeting some very successful and influential community members.

Representative Paul and Chief Jeanne Lynch recently spoke about Chief Lynch's daughter Emma who was nominated by Rep. Paul for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program.  Emma graduated from Clear Brook High School and is now in the Army ROTC program and the Corps of Cadets at TX A&M University.  Rep. Paul was excited to learn that Emma is planning to start Nursing school and will commission as an Army nurse when she graduates in 2020.

Dawn had the pleasure of attending the recent Aerospace Scholars summer graduation where our community was well represented by graduate Daniel Abreo.  The guest speaker was NASA Flight Operations Director Brian Kelly.  High School Aerospace Scholars, or HAS, is an interactive online learning experience highlighted by a weeklong internship. Selected students are encouraged to study mathematics, science, engineering and computer science by interacting with engineers at NASA's Johnson Space Center. The project includes preliminary interactive Web-based activities, distance learning and a residential experience during the summer at JSC. From across the state of Texas, students are selected to participate by their state legislator through a competitive process. Selected students are Texas residents and U.S. citizens currently in their junior year of high school (rising seniors) with an interest and aptitude for mathematics, science, engineering or computer science.
