The Texas Tribune's: "Protecting Houston Before the Next Storm." In March, The Texas Tribune hosted an informational meeting on hurricane storm surge protection at the San Jacinto College Maritime Technology and Training Center. This is a great issue of importance to our Bay Area cities, and is imperative to continue discussion in the region and at the state level.
If the Houston-Galveston region remains unprotected from substantial storm surge during a hurricane, the risk are far too many. At risk are the lives and well-being of 5.5 million residents, their properties, jobs and businesses. It is home to NASA Johnson Space Center, the world-renowned Texas Medical Center and the global energy industry. Without the protection of a storm surge protection concept, a direct hit from a hurricane could obliterate the Ports of Houston, Texas City and Galveston and the petrochemical and industrial complexes, causing multi-billions in lost trade and a crippling of global commerce reliant upon these resources.
