Governor Greg Abbott Delivers State of the State Address

Today in the Texas House chamber, Governor Abbott delivered the 2015 State of the State address to a joint legislature.  Governor Abbott announced five emergency items: early education, higher education research initiatives, transportation funding, border security funding and ethics reform.  I look forward to working with my colleagues on these very important issues put before us.  I encourage constituents to contact my office with your thoughts and suggestions on the issues as we proceed with the legislative session.  To view the Governor's Budget and the State of the State Address click here

President's Day Observed in the Texas House

On Monday, the Texas House commemorated President's Day by following in a prayer led by Pastor of the Day Mark Collins who was dressed to honor President George Washington.  Thank you Pastor Collins for spending the day with the Texas House of Representatives and honoring our first president.

Longhorn Space Center Project Tour

My friend, Gene Hollier invited me to a tour of The Longhorn Space Center Project. This project is a 60-acre tract of land located at Johnson Space Center with partnerships between the Clear Creek Independent School District, The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America and NASA. It allows students to raise and breed longhorn cattle and to learn about science, agriculture, and animal care. This was a great idea to bring the natural history of Texas cattle to NASA. A special treat to the tour was a visit to both the Saturn V rocket building and to building 9 (aka: SVMF (Space Vehicle Mockup Facility) where we were able to witness some of the CCISD students working on robotics projects. NASA will continue to inspire us and create new possibilities for the future, benefiting people everywhere.

Texas Silver-Haired Legislature
Stephen A. Coycault-Harris County

This week the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature was in session and it was a pleasure for me to meet Stephen Coycault from Harris County.  The Silver-Haired Legislature provides senior citizens an opportunity to become directly involved in the legislative process.  A forum for older citizens was established to debate issues and establish priorities based on the result of these discussions.

Advocacy training is provided, enabling delegates to offer informed assistance on such policy matters. Their advocacy training also gives support to older citizens and private sectors, boards, and commissions.

Their vision is that the applied wisdom, energy, and experience of aging will improve the lives of Texans through education, knowledge, and involvement in legislation and governmental affairs. To learn more about the Texas Silver Haired Legislature click here.
